Dear EMCA/AI network members, Hereby a reminder that our upcoming meeting will take place on Friday March 28, 12.30-14.00 CET. Many thanks for your input last meeting regarding topics of interest. We would like to turn our attention towards the topic of competency, which relates to subtopics like AI and contingencies of different service activities, […]
Dear EMCA/AI network members, Hereby a reminder for our upcoming meeting this Friday May 30, 12.30-14.00 CET. This will be a discussion session. We would like to continue some thoughts that arose during our last meeting concerning the relation between EM/CA (of interactions involving non-humans) and posthumanism. We will prepare an introduction and some […]
This will be a show-and-tell meeting, both accessible to those who have not attended last semester and following somewhat on prior discussions. Please find the descriptions of both show-and-tells below. Iullia Avgustis will present some data consisting of video recordings of the quadruped robot Spot (Boston Dynamics), remotely controlled by a hidden “wizard” in public settings. A […]
This will be a reading session addressing the topic of simulation. Our main reading will be Lecture 32 by Sacks. This lecture concerns the notion of imitation, touching on what it means for behavior to be treated as an imitation rather than the ‘real’ thing. The lecture came up last meeting in relation to Wizard of Oz data […]
This will be another reading session, this time addressing the topic of trust which came up last meeting. Our main reading will be: Watson, R. (2009). Constitutive practices and Garfinkel’s notion of trust: Revisited. Journal of Classical Sociology, 9(4), 475-499. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1468795X09344453 Watson’s article hopefully helps us discuss the concept on a deeper level, as it calls on Garfinkel’s formative chapter on […]

This will be a discussion session, where we would like to explore/poke at our tendency to look at moments where trouble arises or where some ‘breaching’ occurs in interaction with technology. To this end, we would like to flip the script and ask: what if we were to look at moments in our data where human-machine interaction worked […]
This will be a discussion session dedicated to re-enactment as a research strategy, building on what came up during our meeting in February 2026. Re-enactment sits at an uneasy intersection between EM and CA traditions. For EM scholars, the power of EM lies in creating breaching conditions or tutorial problems (Garfinkel 1967, 2002) that make the invisible machinery of social order […]
