EMCAI Meeting – Friday 24 April – 12.30-14.00 CET

This will be a discussion session, where we would like to explore/poke at our tendency to look at moments where trouble arises or where some ‘breaching’ occurs in interaction with technology.
To this end, we would like to flip the script and ask: what if we were to look at moments in our data where human-machine interaction worked ‘successfully’?
Aside from a discussion guided by some (provoking) questions – such as what is ’success’ in HMI and what practices, materiality and tech affordances allow that ’success’ – we would like to make it more concrete by looking at one or two snippets of data where technology ‘worked’.
We therefore invite you to please reach out if you might have such a snippet in your own data (lynn.derijk@ru.nl).
Bringing a snippet does not require a defense of whether it actually works – having the sense it ‘works’ makes it interesting enough regardless of what we exactly consider working ‘successfully’.
To also stimulate the discussion from the angle of research output, we include two short empirical readings that might be interesting to take a (rough) look at, since these articles arguably discuss moments of ‘success’ or provide us with ways to think about what ‘success’ might look like:
