Show-and-tells

One type of session we regularly host is the ‘show-and-tell’. The idea is to briefly share what we are working on through showing some data, usually video recordings of interactions involving any form of artificial agent, such as robots and voice user interfaces. Any stage of work is welcome.

A show-and-tell may be structured however you see fit, but here are a few things to keep in mind as you are getting ready:

1. Plan to present for 10-15 minutes so that others get to engage and comment on your work.

2. How you present is up to you:

  • Some just bring a video snippet and introduce it, leaving some time to play it 2-3 times as in a mini data session.
  • Others like to prepare 2-3 slides with some background before presenting the video. This can be especially valuable if you are working on a new technology that people are unlikely to be familiar with and/or if the setting is very complex and needs further explanation.

3. Some things you could cover in the show-and-tell before showing your clip:

  • Introduce your setting and technology broadly.
  • Tell us about your analytic focus, what angle are you analysing this data from?
  • Introduce the specific clip: who is in it, what are we going to see?

4. We typically do not distribute transcripts in a show-and-tell, but you may want to subtitle your video if talk is important (and/or if the language is not English).

Upcoming sessions and how to sign up for slots will be shared through the mailing list. For new members interested in doing a show-and-tell, we request attending some meetings and getting a feel for the network before reserving a slot.
