SUMMARY:EMCAI Meeting – Friday 24 April – 12.30-14.00 CET
DESCRIPTION:This will be a discussion session\, where we would like to explore/poke at our tendency to look at moments where trouble arises or where some ‘breaching’ occurs in interaction with technology. \nTo this end\, we would like to flip the script and ask: what if we were to look at moments in our data where human-machine interaction worked ‘successfully’?\n\nAside from a discussion guided by some (provoking) questions – such as what is ’success’ in HMI and what practices\, materiality and tech affordances allow that ’success’ – we would like to make it more concrete by looking at one or two snippets of data where  technology ‘worked’.\n\nWe therefore invite you to please reach out if you might have such a snippet in your own data (lynn.derijk@ru.nl).\nBringing a snippet does not require a defense of whether it actually works – having the sense it ‘works’ makes it interesting enough regardless of what we exactly consider working ‘successfully’.\n\nTo also stimulate the discussion from the angle of research output\, we include two short empirical readings that might be interesting to take a (rough) look at\, since these articles arguably discuss moments of ‘success’ or provide us with ways to think about what ‘success’ might look like:\nHazel\, S.\, Brandt\, A.\, He\, Y. V.\, Lim\, E.\, Joselowitz\, J.\, & Ellis\, Z. (2026\, March). Empathy as interactional accomplishment in clinical interactions with a conversational agent. In Proceedings of the 1st Workshop on Linguistic Analysis for Health (HeaLing 2026) (pp. 284-290).\n\nRodil\, K.\, Elisabeth Larsen\, C.\, Caesar Faelled\, C.\, Færch Skov\, E.\, Gustafsen\, T.\, Krummheuer\, A.\, & Rehm\, M. (2020\, October). Spending time: co-designing a personalized calendar at the care center. In Proceedings of the 11th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction: Shaping Experiences\, Shaping Society (pp. 1-11).

SUMMARY:EMCAI Meeting – Friday 22 May – 12.30-14.00 CET
DESCRIPTION:This will be a discussion session dedicated to re-enactment as a research strategy\,  building on what came up during our meeting in February 2026.  \nRe-enactment sits at an uneasy intersection between EM and CA traditions. For EM scholars\, the power of EM lies in creating breaching conditions or tutorial problems (Garfinkel 1967\, 2002) that make the invisible machinery of social order visible: a logic that opens the door to staged or reconstructed situations. For CA\, research is grounded in the analysis of naturally occurring talk and interaction\, where any departure from “the real thing” risks distorting the very phenomena under study. This tension is what makes re-enactment a productive but sometimes divisive topic across the two traditions. The ambition is to figure out what makes re-enactment as research strategy valuable or thorny by considering several questions (with some re-enactment data to support):  \n\nWhat is re-enactment exactly?\nHow to do it?\nWhere (not) to use it and why?\nWhat is your own experience with re-enactment? \n\nWe hope to have a lively discussion\, wherein everyone feels free to support or challenge this research strategy. \nTo prepare for the session we suggest the following reading:  \nSormani\, Philippe (2020): « Re-enactment as a research strategy »\, In: Borgdorff\, H.\, Pinch\, T. and Peters\, P. (Eds.)\, Dialogues between Artistic Research and Science and Technology Studies. London & New York\, pp. 184-200.
